Panic as “human tower” collapses at Spanish festival
Eleven athletes were plunged into a crowd of people after a “human tower” collapsed during a Barcelona festival.
The human tower is a tradition of Barcelona’s La Mercè festival, in which athletes – or “castellers” – create a pyramid of human bodies, showcasing their balance and teamwork. But this year’s human tower went wrong when the final two castellers lost their balance while climbing to the top, sending eleven of the athletes plunging into the crowd below.
Footage captured by onlookers shows one man clutching his chest in pain as he lies on top of the other athletes, while another person was carried away by paramedics on a stretcher.
The La Mercè festival has been held each year in Barcelona since 1902, as a celebration of the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.
